At the age of 13 John Keegan contracted orthopaedic tuberculosis, which subsequently affected his gait. Dyer was born in St. John's, Newfoundland (present-day Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada) and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at the age of sixteen. While still in the naval reserve, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1963; a Master of Arts in military history from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1966; and a Doctor of Philosophy in military and Middle Eastern history at King's College London in 1973. Dyer served in the Canadian, American and British naval reserves. He was employed as a senior lecturer in war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, 1973–77.

At the age of 13 John Keegan contracted orthopaedic tuberculosis, which subsequently affected his gait. The long-term effects of his tuberculosis rendered him unfit for military service, and the timing of his birth made him too young for service in the Second World War, facts he mentioned in his works as an ironic observation on his profession and interests.[1] The illness also interrupted his education during his teenage years; however, his education included a period at King's College, Taunton, and two years at Wimbledon College, which led to entry to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1953. In 1960 he was appointed to a lectureship in Military History at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
Dyer was born in St. John's, Newfoundland (present-day Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada) and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at the age of sixteen. While still in the naval reserve, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1963; a Master of Arts in military history from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1966; and a Doctor of Philosophy in military and Middle Eastern history at King's College London in 1973. Dyer served in the Canadian, American and British naval reserves. He was employed as a senior lecturer in war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, 1973–77.
